Spider-Man: No Way Home

The production of Spider-Man: No Way Home included a 'Spider-Man therapy session' by Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire

Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts revealed that he and Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire, Zendaya and Jacob Batalone had a kind of 'Spiderman therapy' before filming the first scene of the movie together.

Speaking to Variety, Watts shared that the so-called therapy session was the first time everyone had gotten together to talk about the story and how much Spider-Man means to each of them.

Watts said, "We sat in foldable chairs and went through the script together. I had spoken to everyone individually, but to bring everyone together to talk about the story, how the details fit together and what Spider-Man meant to them, was really exciting to me. We had the three actors. The only ones who played Spider-Man in a movie, and they each went through a lot, both on and off screen. It was like a Spider-Man therapy session."

This session, and all the work that went into before filming the first scene of No Way Home, allowed Watts to pause and realize that he and the crew were "shooting something more than a scene out of a movie." For them, it was "watching a once-in-a-lifetime event".

Watts also discussed how his three Spider-Man films, Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home, reflected his biggest fear because he made these same personal feelings central to the film's theme.

"I've always taken my biggest fear and made it central to the themes of the movies," Watts said. "Homecoming is about a boy who gets so much opportunity and is so afraid of missing out, that he creates disaster. That was my fear: 'What if I screw everything up? Far From Home was...'" "About feeling afraid to make a second movie and screw things up. Peter Parker gets a job and doesn't want to risk it. No Way Home is about trying to finish this origin story and the responsibility that comes with it. Peter Parker and Spiderman mean a lot to people and I felt that responsibility."
